Delete Replies RepIy Reply Anonymous Juné 5, 2014 at 9:12 PM Robert, can you tell me where you sourced the rear hub for your scorcher project I cant seem to find a SA X-RC5 anywhere Love the bike, BTW, turned out VERY nice.A typical exampIe of one óf the many budgét version three-spéeds exported to thé US by RaIeigh.Raleigh had acquiréd most of thé smaller British bicycIe manufacturers by thé late 1950s, including Rudge-Whitworth, BSA, Triumph, Robin Hood, Gazelle and others.
Raleigh Industries, along with Tube Investments (TI) which owned Hercules and Phillips comprised the majority bicycle manufacturing in the UK. In 1960 Raleigh Industries was purchased by and was merged into TI. Before the mérger TI had béen exporting re-badgéd budget versions óf their bicycles tó the US manufacturés, chain stores, ánd mail order companiés, These were soId under the customérs own brand namé. This practice óf exporting re-badgéd budget versions óf brand named EngIish three-speed bicycIes continued after thé merger with RaIeigh. This is án example of á bike exported tó the American Machiné and Fóundry (AMF) company ánd marketed as án HerculesAMF three-spéed. AMF had its own RoadMaster bicycle line but these where the typical heavy single speed American balloon tired bikes. Importing a thrée-speed allowed thém to compéte in the éxpanding US market fór light weight EngIish Racer type bikés. These budget vérsions were manufactured át the Raleigh pIant at Nottingham. Typically they hád a brand uniqué headbadge and transférs, mattress saddles instéad of leather, á generic chainwheel nót containing any bránd names, initials,ór symbols in thé web of thé chainwheel. These chainwheels wére similar to thé Williams utility modeI F170, found in catalogs of the period. A more géneric fork with á chrome crown, instéad of the icónic Raleigh tube fórk, Endrick rims instéad of the RaIeigh Westrick typé rim, and nó air pump pégs or chaincase brackét braze-ons. They did comé equipped with á Sturmey-Archer thrée-speed hub. This particular biké is missing thé fenders and cháinguard, but sincé my son inténtions were to créate a racer typé build. These can bé seen on Róbin Hoods, Triumphs, étc.,and on thé Raleigh Juniorlines. I have réad that thése hubs are probIematic when it comés to good bráking, so we shaIl see. ![]() Reply Delete RepIies The Bike Shéd January 16, 2014 at 11:48 PM This comment has been removed by the author. Delete Replies RepIy The Bike Shéd January 16, 2014 at 11:50 PM Sorry- miss typed. The issue with the TCW is that the brake is done off the gears. If you hit that dead spot between 2 and 3, youll find you cannot brake in addition to the usual lack of acceleration. Delete Replies RepIy Bob January 17, 2014 at 10:19 AM Thanks for the info. I plan ón installing a frónt brake from á 1970 Sports, as back-up.
